Thanks, Tricia. Great article. You’ve cemented the idea I’ve been lead to believe about maintaing a consistent voice in a shop. I have two very diverse crafts that would not create a cohesive body of work in a single shop. So far, I’m an etsy shopper, but plan to open two stores in the near future for the items I create in each craft. Like your example, I’ve hearted shops based on things that interest me only to find some unlikely objects appear in them later on. The lack of focus in such a shop usually results in removing it from my favorites.

This is exactly what I have been grappling with lately. We started out with fused glass items, a lot of them based on classic quilt block designs. I’m a quilter, my husband is the fused glass artist. But I want to add my own things to the etsy shop, journal covers, pencil bags, pincushions, etc. Too confusing? I’m really starting to think we need two different shops, but that’s a lot to maintain…

this is an EXCELLENT point! i removed my linocuts this past year and made my shop all about hand-felted items for this very reason. while i still make paintings and prints, i am finding new tools and venues for those pieces, rather than clutter my Etsy shop and confuse my prospective buyers with an unfocused product line. .-= kim´s last blog ..Felted Acorn Holiday Ornaments (Set of 3) =-.
